The Other Side

The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” Mark 4:38b

Jesus sets the example for us today, that a growing faith and dependence on Him are part of being a follower of Christ. The disciples were with Jesus on a boat crossing the Sea of Galilee. When a “furious storm came upon them,” the disciples—among them some seasoned fishermen—were afraid for their lives. Did God not care? Weren’t they obeying Jesus who told them to “go over to the other side”?

We often feel afraid when we face things that we can’t control. No one is exempt from the storms of life. But just as the disciples who initially feared the storm later came to trust Christ more, so the storms we face can bring us to a deeper faith in Christ. Through our trials we can learn that no storm last forever and none are big enough to sink our boat, if Christ is with us.
