Hope Beneath the Waves

The sailors cast Jonah into the sea, and God immediately calmed the storm. God then appointed a “great fish” to swallow him. However, we must be careful not to regard this fish as evidence of the Lord’s judgment. Instead, it is His instrument of salvation.

For Jonah, death was not found in the belly of the fish but in the depths of the sea itself. God could have justly let Jonah die, but in His mercy, He chooses to spare Jonah’s life and grants him repentance. The Lord “appointed” the fish to save His prophet (and Jonah found hope beneath the waves.
