An Introduction to Philippians

In spite of difficult circumstances as a prisoner in Rome, Paul is rejoicing. The Secret of his joy is his devotion to Christ; he lives for Christ and the gospel. The name of Christ appears 18 times in the first chapter, and the gospel of Christ six times. The focus of his life is made clear in chapter one, verse 21 where he says; “For me to live is Christ and to die is gain.” It is this single mindedness that brings joy to Paul. It made no difference to Paul what happened to him, as long as Christ was glorified and the gospel was shared. Joy is “the serious business of heaven.” It is a consequence of being preoccupied with the living and indwelling Christ, confident that He will complete His redeeming work in us and through us. Are we there yet? No, but God isn't finished either
