Amazed and Frightened

After calling His first disciples, Jesus established His base for ministry in the village of Capernaum. While there, Jesus entered the synagogue on the sabbath and began to teach. The people were amazed at the depth of His teaching and the authority by which He taught. Also in the synagogue was a man, possessed by an impure spirit. Frightened by the presence of Christ, the impure spirit cried out to Christ in fear, because he knew who Jesus was.

The people were amazed, but they did not know who Jesus was and the demons were terrified because they knew who He was. Sadly, being amazed at Jesus is not enough to save. What is necessary is a combination of both. You need to be amazed and terrified. Amazed at such a Savior and terrified at such a judge.
